- light housework – 35 minutes
- vigorous housework – 30 minutes
- scrubbing floors – 25 minutes

These are just a few activities that will burn about 100 calories. To lose one pound of fat, you need to burn about 3500 calories. If you add one of these activities every day for 35 days, and don’t increase the number of calories you eat, you will lose one pound. (I know that doesn’t seem like much, but you can do more than one activity a day, and you can add some of these other tips to increase your fat loss.)
2. If you regularly eat bacon for breakfast or lunch, just passing on two strips of bacon is enough to reduce your calorie intake by 100 calories. (Assuming you don’t replace the calories with something else.)
3. Drink green tea, preferably unsweetened. You get a no calorie beverage that some studies suggest also increases your metabolism, so you burn more calories. And green tea is an excellent source of anti-oxidants.
4. Make sure you are eating appropriate portion sizes. We have written about this subject many times, including the recent post Natural Weight Loss Portion Size Guide.
5. Use a smaller plate. We have made this suggestion before, you can read more about it here: Smaller Plate. Research has shown that people both serve more and eat more food on a larger plate; so opt for a smaller plate, and effortlessly save yourself some calories.
6. Eat more slowly. When people eat quickly, they tend to eat more calories. Take your time, chew each mouthful thoroughly, and savor the flavor. Try putting down your fork between each mouthful. This will give your body time to realize when it has had enough. You could even try setting a timer for 25-30 minutes, and be sure you use the full amount of time to eat your meal.
7. If you are having pasta, choose marinara sauce over a cream sauce. Cream sauces tend to be higher in fat, and therefore higher in calories. But remember to limit yourself to a single serving.
8. Start your meals with a broth based soup, preferably with some leafy green vegetables in it. This will result in you feeling full sooner, and you will eat fewer calories.
9. Eat vegetarian one or two days a week. Vegetarians tend to weigh less than meat eaters, partly because vegetarian meals are higher in fiber, which helps you feel full with fewer calories. And most vegetables are nutrient dense rather than calorie dense, as long as you don’t prepare them with a lot of oil or other fat.
10. Turn off the television. there is a disturbing correlation between obesity and hours spent watching television. The more time you spend watching television, the more likely you are to be obese.
