We recently posted about the obesogenic environment (Read that post here: Natural Weight Loss and the Obesogenic Environment), and some of our readers seem discouraged by that post, especially about the research that says being overweight itself makes you more likely to gain weight. We found another article that might help you get past the discouragement.

“Exercise may encourage healthy eating by changing parts of the brain that influence impulsive behaviour, according to a new review of the available literature by researchers from Spain and the US published in Obesity Reviews. The researchers conclude that in a society where we are surrounded by temptations and triggers that facilitate over-eating and excess, the part of the brain responsible for ‘inhibitory control’ undergoes ‘relentless strain’ (they note it has limited capacity anyway), and doing exercise on a regular basis enhances it.”

Exercising benefits natural weight loss

We have encouraged our readers for several years now to make exercise a regular part of their schedule, and have repeated that the keys to natural weight loss are healthy eating choices, and regular physical activity. We have encouraged exercise because it helps you burn calories, but this new research seems to say that it also helps you control your desire to overeat. One of the researchers said, “…when exercise is added to a weight-loss diet, treatment of obesity is more successful and the diet is adhered to in the long run.”

If you have been neglecting exercise, this study should help you get yourself motivated. (Please check with your doctor to be sure you are healthy enough before you begin an exercise program, especially if you have any health problems.)
